Calibre Search
Senior Leadership – Ecology
Location: York, North Yorkshire (Hybrid & Flexible Working)
Salary: 55,000 – 85,000 DOE
Contract: Permanent Full-Time or Part-Time Considered
Ready to take the lead without leaving the practical side of Ecology behind?
Calibre Search is working with an established and expanding multidisciplinary environmental consultancy looking to appoint an experienced Ecology professional into a senior leadership position within its York office.
This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Principal Ecologist ready to progress into senior management, or an established Associate Director or Technical Director seeking a fresh challenge.
The business is looking for someone who can lead, develop and inspire a team, build lasting client relationships and help shape the future of its Ecology offering across the North of England.
Importantly, this isn’t a role where you’ll spend your entire working week behind a desk.
You’ll remain actively involved in ecological projects, visiting sites, providing technical input and working closely with clients and stakeholders, alongside your wider leadership responsibilities.
The Opportunity
You’ll have the opportunity to make a genuine impact within a growing Ecology team, combining people management, technical delivery and commercial development.
Your responsibilities will include:
Leading, mentoring and developing a team of Ecologists, supporting their technical and professional progression.
Managing a varied portfolio of ecological projects across residential, infrastructure, renewable energy and commercial developments.
Remaining hands-on with site visits, ecological surveys, technical assessments and project delivery where appropriate.
Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, developers, planning professionals and other key stakeholders.
Overseeing ecological assessments, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
Managing project budgets, resources, workloads and delivery programmes.
Providing technical guidance, reviewing reports and ensuring high standards across the team.
Supporting business development, identifying opportunities and contributing to tenders and proposals.
Working collaboratively with other environmental and planning disciplines on complex projects.
Helping shape the continued growth and strategic direction of the Ecology team across the North.
What We’re Looking For
We’re keen to speak with experienced Ecologists who enjoy the balance of leading people, managing clients and staying involved in the technical and practical aspects of the profession.
Ideally, you’ll bring:
6+ years’ experience working within ecological consultancy.
Previous experience managing, supervising or mentoring Ecologists, with the confidence to lead and develop a team.
Strong experience managing ecological projects from initial planning through to delivery.
Excellent client-facing communication skills and the ability to manage relationships with multiple stakeholders.
Good technical knowledge of UK ecology legislation, planning requirements, EcIA, HRA and BNG.
Commercial awareness, including experience managing project budgets and contributing to business development.
A willingness to remain involved in site work, surveys and practical project delivery.
Membership of CIEEM or a relevant professional body.
A relevant degree in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
A full UK driving licence.
Experience with protected species licences, major infrastructure schemes, multidisciplinary projects or wider business leadership would be advantageous.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to join a well-established consultancy with ambitious growth plans and a strong multidisciplinary offering.
You’ll benefit from:
Competitive salary of 55,000- 85,000 DOE.
Hybrid and flexible working arrangements.
Genuine influence over team development and future growth.
A varied position combining leadership, client engagement and practical ecological work.
Exposure to interesting and technically challenging projects.
Enhanced annual leave and company pension.
Private healthcare benefits.
Professional membership support and dedicated CPD opportunities.
Clear career progression and development pathways.
Opportunities to collaborate with specialists across multiple environmental disciplines.
Interested?
Whether you’re an experienced Principal Ecologist looking to step into a broader leadership role, or an established senior leader who wants to remain close to project delivery, we’d be keen to hear from you.
